So there is this idea that keeps spinning around in your head.
Post-it notes are stuck on your desk filled with ideas quickly jotted down to serve as reminders. Inspiration for one day.
Your day planner has a list of people to call to have lunch with, to talk through your ideas and possibly get feedback.
Perhaps you even purchased a domain name – or two… – when those late night ideas popped into your mind and just in case someone else might have the same inspiration, you bought it before they could.
Your idea for a Passion Project is consuming more and more time in your life. You know the time is coming when you are going to have to take action or let the idea move on to someone who has the time to bring it to life.
Is it the Right Time to Start Your Passion Project?
In the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, she talks about the concept that ideas can move from person to person if they are not fully realized, acted on and brought to life. And while her conversation leans towards writing and book creation this concept of ideas as more than just thoughts in our heads, intrigues me for I have felt it happen in my own life. An idea was swirling in my head for a few months and I “wasn’t able” to act on it. And then just a few months later someone I knew was creating the exact idea. As I was reading Big Magic I got chills when Elizabeth Gilbert explains this concept.
Your ideas came to you specifically for a reason. You are the person who is meant to see them come to life. Don't let them slip away. #ThePassionProjectProject #BigMagic Click To TweetI tell you this concept not to put pressure on or to stress you out about your own ideas, but simply as a way of looking at ideas and inspiration in general. To see the importance of your ideas. And the importance of bringing them to life not just to you but to them.
They came to you specifically for a reason. They chose you not someone else. You are the person who is meant to see them through. If you don’t value them, act on them and bring them to life they deserve to be set free to find someone who can.
As I discussed in “What is a Passion Project?” , it is ultimately up to you to decide when it is the right time to start. It may come when you just can’t take the status quo any longer, it may come when your company decides to restructure resulting in layoffs, or it may come when you least expect it laying in bed at night or in morning in the shower.
But, given the recent news of the loss of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain (and I pray I will not need to update this article with the loss of any more visionaries), I encourage you to stop waiting for a “sign” to tell you when the time is right.
My new answer to this question is,
the right time to start your passion project is NOW.
Wait no longer.
Think about it no more.
Begin to take action now.
Fill your time, and our world, with things that bring you happiness. Things that make a difference no matter how big or small you may think they are. The world needs your ideas, needs your passion for life, beauty, people, health, words, and on and on.
The world needs more people who love what they are doing. More people feeling fulfilled in their lives. More people creating positive energy and spreading that energy around.
The world needs your ideas!
Now it is time to take action!!
Either in the comments below, in your journal or on a scrap of paper, fill in the blank

2 – Two things I can do this week to start my project …………….
3 – I will complete the two things above on or before ………….
